A woman in Uganda is crediting “strength and resilience” after going through in vitro fertilization (IVF) and welcoming twins at 70 years old.
Safina Namukwaya welcomed twins — a boy and a girl — on Wednesday, Nov. 29, at Women’s Hospital International and Fertility Centre in Uganda, the hospital announced in a statement on theirFacebook page.
The hospital congratulated her, saying it is more than a “medical success; it’s about the strength and resilience of the human spirit,” per theBBC.
Namukwaya admitted that pregnancy at her age was no easy feat, sharing, “There was a time I felt very sick because of the pregnancy. I spent nearly all my savings. Then I went to a hospital and talked to the doctor about my condition.”

That doctor helped organize funding for Namukwaya to be transported to another area for better care. She has been grateful for his generosity and notes that her partner chose not to participate after learning she was expecting twins.
“Men don’t like to hear that you are going to have more than one child,” Namukwaya said in her interview, as translated to English. “Even after I was admitted, my man never showed up.”
When asked if she’s ready to raise her babies and what comes next, she admitted, “I really don’t know.”
“God is in charge. You see, you can have one child and feel overwhelmed. But here I am with twins at a time I am weak … I don’t know, but they say every child comes with their blessings.”
The twins are her second birth in three years, having welcomed a daughter in 2020, per theBBC.
