The International (TI) is Dota 2’s biggest annual tournament which pits the best teams to crown a world champion. This prestigious championship would consistently become one of the most popular esports tournaments of the year. However, TI12’s viewership would be the first one in history that failed to enter the top 10 list.

According toEsports Charts, TI12 falls in 12th place for the most popular esports tournaments of the year. The event was beaten by notable championships such as League of Legends' Worlds and CS:GO’s BLAST.tv Paris Major. Surprisingly, a few regional tournaments also made it ahead of TI12’s viewership including League of Legends Champions Korea (LCK) and Mobile Legends Pro League (MPL) Indonesia.

TI12 viewership: A decent record

TI12 which returned to Seattle, USA this year saw many different aspects to the tournament. One of them was the format in which teams compete over three separate weekends. The one-month event garnered a respectably high viewership and is one of the most popular TIs ever recorded.

TI12’s viewership peaked with 1.4 million concurrent views. This peak happened during the first match of the Grand Finals between Team Spirit and Gaimin Gladiators. With 1.4 million Peak Views, TI12 becomes the fourth most popular TI in history, falling behind TI10, TI9, and TI11.

As we can see, the previous TI scored a better viewership compared to this year. TI11 managed to rake in 1.8 million Peak Views which was achieved during the Tundra Esports vs Team Secret Final. This placed TI11 in seventh place in thetop ten most popular tournaments in 2022.

The most popular TI was in 2021 when Team Spirit lifted their first Aegis. The event occurred without a live audience as COVID-19 had surged in Romania. It likely contributed to the rise of viewership asTI10 flexed a whopping 2.7 million Peak Views. This placed TI10 in second place in thetop ten most popular tournaments in 2021.

Despite a decent record for TI12’s viewership, it cannot compete with several other esports giants this year.

League of Legends has continuously dominated the viewership ladder as its player base is multifold. Mobile Legends has also gradually overtaken Dota 2’s numbers from several angles. It is the biggest mobile disciple out there and it has only grown more popular recently, breaking records even for its regional tournaments.
