A mesmerizing new video shows a " once - in - a - lifetime encounter " with a bizarre , bright redoctopusswimming above theGreat Barrier Reefin northeastern Australia .

The encounter , first reported by local Australian news websiteBundaberg Now , was a rare sighting of a blanket octopus , named after the blanket - like overweight ness between its sleeve . Jacinta Shackleton , a nautical biologist andreefguide , filmed and photographed the devilfish while diving off the seashore of Lady Elliot Island in Queensland on Jan. 6 .

" When I first saw it I imagine it could have been a puerile fish with long fins , but as it came nigher I agnise it was a cover octopus and I was overjoyed and could n’t contain my fervor ! " Shackleton tell Bundaberg Now .
