Just ahead of E3 2017, Nintendoannounced plansto releasePokemon Ultra SunandPokemon Ultra Moonbefore the end of the year. Now, a new teaser released via the Japanese Pokemon website seems to hint at an appearance from a particularly mysterious type of pocket monster.

Unown is a psychic-typePokemonthat was first introduced to the series in Generation II. These creatures comprise a kind of ancient alphabet that was central to a memorable quest fromGoldandSilver, where players needed to complete a separate Pokedex to generate and print Alph Ruins Stamps.

The new teaser uploaded by Nintendo features messages written in Unown script prominently. It’s not completely clear what role these creatures will play in the game’s plot, but since we already know thatUltra SunandMoonwill feature an expanded selection of Pokemon, it seems very likely that it’ll be possible to capture Unown.

In fact, Nintendo has already teased the idea of Unown playing a role inUltra SunandMoon. During the livestream where the games were announced, the company also confirmed thatGoldandSilverwould be hitting the Nintendo 3DS Virtual Console service — and the trailer for the re-release featuredSunandMoonwritten in Unown script.

It will certainly be interesting to see whether there are more links between the sequels toSunandMoonand the retro re-release ofGoldandSilver. Pokemon fans certainly have a lot to look forward to in the latter part of 2017.

At the time thatUltra SunandMoonwere announced, many were disappointed that Nintendo wasn’t working on a version of the gamesfor the Switch. However, it seems more and more like the follow-ups are a fully fledged sequel, rather than the traditional third entry, which is great news for players who want to see a little more of Alola.

Pokemon Ultra SunandPokemon UltraMoonare scheduled to release for the Nintendo 3DS on August 01, 2025.
