The release ofThe Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remasteredhas brought the resurgence of a beloved pastime from the original: using the character creator to make abominations. One ofOblivion’s original quirksis characters that are notoriously odd-looking, and the remaster has only allowed for stranger creations thanks to its realistic textures, and one player has created their “magnum opus,” Sir Vancealot, based on current U.S. vice president J.D. Vance.

Twitter userCamelcast Official(viaGamesRadar) shared a screenshot ofSir Vancealot, theirOblivion Remasteredcharacter that plays on the popular meme of editing photos of Vance to have a rotund face, rosy cheeks, and a piercing gaze. “This is my magnum opus in Oblivion Remaster,” they said. Creating bizarre characters has long been a tradition in RPGs and withOblivion’s character creator especially, and the practice is living on with the re-release.

Sir Vancealot Gained Attention From An Ex-Bethesda Dev

His Striking Visage Is Hard To Ignore

The tweet went viral and even grabbed the attention ofJeff Gardiner, a former Bethesda developer who worked onOblivion. Gardiner says of Sir Vancealot,“Towards the end of development when we were all playtesting Oblivion, we used to all compete to see who could make the most absurd face. Have to say, I think this would have won.”

Gardiner worked at Bethesda for a long time, contributing toOblivion,Fallout 3,Skyrim, andFallout 4before serving as the project lead forFallout 76. It’s fun to hear the creators of the game also had fun pushing the character creator to its limits.Oblivion’s facial animations were cutting edge in 2006, but grew infamous as the game aged. Therelease ofOblivion Remasteredhas luckily only built on facial animations and not overhauled them completely, letting newcomers experience the hilarity.

Oblivion Remastered’s Character Creator Is Super Fun

An Improvement With Just As Much Wackiness

Character creation is an important part of RPGs, and some players love to spend hours on their characters.Oblivion Remasteredcould have completely overhauled the game’s character creator and, by extension, the characters themselves, butit was a smart move by Virtuos and Bethesda to leave it intact.Bethesda’s games have a janky charm, and it’s part of the appeal for longtime fans returning to the game.

At the same time,Oblivion Remastered’s character creator has greatly benefited from the updates by Virtuos. It’s relatively easy to make a character that has conventional facial features, without that distinctOblivionoddness. In the original game, this was exceptionally difficult. But it’s important that you’re able to still make very weird characters like Sir Vancealot too –Oblivionis a goofy game, and some players just want to traipse through Cyrodiil as an exceptionally chubby version of J.D. Vance inThe Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered.
