Last year’sGod of Wartook a huge risk by taking the series in a completely different direction. The PlayStation 4 exclusive and Game of the Year recipient at the 2018 Game Awards has been credited for itsdeep narrative, single-cinematic camera shot, and having one of the best video game weapons of 2018. Yet even with the size of the open-world and a respectable number of side objectives in the game already, Sony Santa Monica did at one point have plans to expand even further upon the adventures of Kratos and his son, Atreus.
While appearing on Kinda Funny’s GameOverGreggy Show,God of WarDirector Cory Barlog talked more in-depth about both the ambition and aspirations he and his team had while developing the game. During the discussion, he mentioned plans for more content in the form of DLC, however the scope of the content itself was said to be too big, hence the reason it never got out of its early production stages.
“It would end up being its own thing,…Rightfully so, everybody had said to me, ‘Dude, this is crazy. This isn’t DLC, it’s a little too big.'”
Even though fans may feel there’s no reason to return toGod of Waronce they’ve completed it, a number of updates have been introduced this past summer to encourage replayability. First was the introduction of a photo mode and then, in August,God of Warreceived a New Game + mode, which allowed players to further enhance their gear as they progressed through the story once more.
It’s understandable if some fans are upset they won’t be getting any more content forGod of Warthan what’s available right now, and that’s mostly a credit to Sony and the way they’ve treated their first-party exclusives. Whether it beinFAMOUS First Light, Uncharted: The Lost Legacy, Horizon Zero Dawn: The Frozen Wilds,or more recentlyMarvel’s Spider-Man: The City that Never Sleeps,Sony has created an expectation that more content will follow the initial release. It looks like forGod ofWar, however, fans will justhave to wait for whatever Sony Santa Monica is preppingfor next.
