On Friday dark , BBC America screened the first instalment of its upcoming serial Intruders , asterisk John Simm , Mira Sorvino , and James Frain . It was banana . Creepy banana tree . Here are our looter - barren first impressions .
My first impulse was to compose a review that was just the password “ what ” over and over . Because Intruders is actually that weird . It ’s clearly a slow - tan mystery show , because this is n’t the kind of first episode that explain the whole premiss to watcher . The secret is wrapped up in vehemence , contemplation on immortality , onetime malarky euphony , and a tiddler who is n’t just a little daughter . allot to the prescribed description , it ’s about a secret society that finds refuge in the bodies of other hoi polloi . And that ? It ’s all you’re able to really get from the first episode , too .
While John Simm has a pretty standard “ my wife ’s gone miss ” plot going on , the episode is littered with puzzling moment hint at the rules of this show ’s existence . There are no concrete explanation . But we do get the sense that all our chief characters — who exhibit ostensibly irrational changes in behavior — are struggling with “ intruder ” who wants to harness their bodies .

Connecting these disparate moments is Richard Shepherd , meet by James Frain . I found Frain ’s bearing very consoling . Not because his character is comforting — objectively , his character does a mess of horrible thing . But he ’s the only person who seems to know what ’s go on . In a sea of perplexing moments , Shepherd ’s scary competence in his missionary station stabilizes everything .
Plus , Frain ’s savourless - out honest in this role . He is n’t just a man on a mission ; he ’s a military man who is uncomfortable with what that mission expect of him . Throughout the episode , he does a lot of thing without show compunction , but there ’s one affair he has to do that he just does n’t feel is correct . Because of that , he makes a immense mistake . It ’s not just an important plot decimal point — it also gives his character more profundity . Frain say in the Q&A after the archetype that we ’d distinguish that Shepherd has “ very complicated ” motif .
Simm plays Jack Whelan , who ends up thread into this whole thing through his married woman , played by Mira Sorvino . Both are fine , although John Simm’sAmerican accentis just ever - so - slightly - not - right . Sorvino plays the slip from normal woman to woman - with - a - mystery very dextrously .

Sorvino said :
There ’s some form of internal struggle going on with me and I ’m very sorry and tortured . And then you see some strange switch in behavior . There ’s understandably an internal tug - of - warfare happening .
She also suggest that the nothingness music mortif of her character is “ very important to the story . ”

The most surprising part of the show was how upright Millie Brown was . She ’s playing a nine - year - old who also has an interior struggle follow by a shift in her behavior . In the workforce of some shaver actors , this could have been a disaster . But it ’s not : She ’s gravid . As a normal girl immobilize in this situation , she ’s nub - breaking . As the other side of her personality , she is shit - your - pants scary . There is a moment in this instalment that , even though I kind of guessed where it was going , was still so horrifying I had to look away . And Brown play it all very well .
This show is going to be fierce , and it does not shy aside from it at all . If that ’s not your kind of scary , jump this . There are all kinds of gruesome deaths in the first episode : Some mystifying and some that just ask to happen . And they show a sight of blood .
This is horror play on a lot of levels . There ’s the part about miss control of your body . There ’s a theme about immortality and the desperate style people attempt to hold on to their life . There ’s the psychological injury of Simm ’s character losing his married woman and learning there ’s some secret to find . There ’s a cabal - thriller vibration running through all of Frain ’s scene . And there ’s the shock and revulsion of the violence . It ’s all thrown into the first episode , and it ’s hard to guess precisely where it ’s all head .

It ’s a glibly - produced show with some safe carrying into action . And a slow - burn coming is always nice . With only eight episodes in the first season , we hope it ’ll be tightly focussed and not weighed down by all the things hinted at in the first sequence . If nothing else , you leave really want to know more . I want to pick upthe Michael Marshall Smith novel it ’s based onjust because it made me so curious .
interloper will premiere on BBC America August 23rd .
