Sans season pass
One of the definitions of ultimate (and certainly the one Square Enix intended with its naming) is “the best achievable or imaginable of its kind.” That’s why theFinal Fantasy XVUltimate Edition is called that — because it has everything included that aFinal Fantasyfan could hope for. Except, that’s not quite true.
Earlier this month, Square Enix announced thatFinal Fantasy XVwill have a season pass. Despite the Ultimate Edition’s price tag of $270, the season pass won’t be included. It’s another $25, bringing the a la carte Truly Ultimate Edition (that doesn’t actually exist) just shy of $300.
Final Fantasy XVdirector Hajime Tabata confirmed this at gamescom and it got posted toTwitter. Making matters worse, there’s an $85 digital version of the game thatdoesinclude it, although that’s nothing more than a $60 base game with the $25 season pass added in. Still, it’s sort of a slap in the face that the season pass is included in other bundles that aren’t the Ultimate Edition.
There are two ways of looking at this. One, folks who plopped down $270 are getting what they signed up for and that’s perfectly acceptable. Or, that this should really have the season pass because that’s what would actually make the package complete. Regardless, this is really more of a Hella Deluxe Edition than an Ultimate Edition.
