“ Critters ” was part of the 2d time of year ofThe New Batman Adventures(the lineal sequel to / rebranding of the original Batman animated series ) , which means everyone working on it should have known advantageously . As far as I can tell , the writers of this particular installment , for some reason , very suddenly start hating their jobs and chose to verbalize their feeling by work an advisedly direful Batman “ adventure . ”

Because this is how it starts : Bruce Wayne and Commissioner Gordon are at the Agricultural Expo . Why ? What are they there ? I know a lot of offence materialize in areas where Bruce is handily turn up , but usually , there are excuses for him to be there , like he ’s been invited to some stuck-up upshot . We do n’t ever get a hint of an account , they ’re just two fop begin their farm on . At any pace , they see Farmer Brown — yes , like the nursery verse , except the man ’s first name is Farmer — and his girl is amaze quick to let out her papa ’s new creation that he laud will cease world hungriness : a big moo-cow .

So he decides to intentionally create a bunch of giant animal - monsters and use them to attack the city . That ’ll show those durned city - folk !
A year later , three giantpraying mantisessneak up on and assail a random restaurant where Bruce materialise to have taken a escort . It ’s a random restaurant around the corner from where a random exterminator is nonchalantly spray his insecticide on a random tree diagram in the city … a random exterminator who just occur to be support next to a giant oil tanker full of insect powder . It ’s incredibly lazy writing , but it gets regretful seconds later when Batman , who fails absolutely to block any of the mantis from doing anything , gets surrounded by them and is about to be kill … except the mantid , at that precise second , fall apart . ( The giant oil tanker of insecticide is nonmeaningful . Grr . )

The Dark Knight realizes these titan , yet formerly living , creatures were bioengineered and design to fall aside , into pieces . It ’s a strange , bad plot decision that also unknowingly results in one of the most perverted things a Batman villain has ever done . Brown give up a strapper , moo-cow , and a crew of chickens who have been mutate in ways that make it very unclear what ’s going on with them , especially the chickens , who appear like robot Corvus corax but also vanish . They do n’t seem to be bred to self - destruct , thank goodness .
The Bat - crew finally takes maintenance of them , although it ’s deserving note that Batman defeated one of the thing we are supposed to understand is a crybaby by knocking it into a gargantuan tank of barbeque sauce . It ’s a trick so frightful , the fact that the stunned chicken comport no resemblance to a volaille helps by making the joke less obvious .
Batman convenes with Gordon at the Police Commissioners role and they pretty much instantly occur to the conclusion that these jumbo rampaging beast - monster are believably the employment of that guy who made that giant rampage animal - monster last year . Just then , a Capricorn figure the elbow room , speaking with Farmer Brown ’s voice and bring out his need : $ 50 million in unmarked card , and no Batman .

Set aside this mavin strategy for a irregular , because I want you to think about this goat . This weird , fucked - up Capricorn — that may be part robot?—trying to get across town , into law headquarters , through the building , which even at night would put up century of workers , without once being noticed . It ’s just so bloody ridiculous . None of that plan is going to work because of course Bullock ’s give-up the ghost to drive an armored cable car full of fake money , and of course Batman and the rest are going to follow him into Brown ’s unearthly unground lair which , despite being undercover , is a farm .
The ground I suspect the writers must have detest Batman is because the scrawny Brown does hand the Dark Knight his keister in a fight using nothing but a pitchfork . Eventually , the farmer / scientist gives Batman the dignity of turning on his pitchfork ’s lightning zapper , grabs Robin as a surety , and then forces all of the Bat - gang and Bullock into a silo which is secretly a rocket …
… which he ’s filled with beg mantis eggs .

Now , Brown says the roquette is going to set down in Central Park , allowing these “ longer - survive ” mantises to make for more havoc through Gotham . But I do n’t see any direction the Eruca vesicaria sativa could land other than crashing , which would kill all the mantises on board . The Eruca sativa also seems rigged to explode , because when Batman inevitably escapes and drives the armored machine off a ramp into the room access of the rising Eruca sativa ’s mantid room — in what I desperately , desperately fear is an allusion to Dukes of Hazzard — the roquette does blow up . The episode closes with the television camera panning tardily to the Moreau - esque island it wrick out Farmer Brown had operated on . A cock crow ominously . The End .
When I get to the conclusion of aWorst Episode Everepisode that authentically pisses me off , it ’s very hard for me to control my anger so I do n’t fall into an incoherent rant at the end . I am go to attempt to stay even - keeled in my complaint , such as Bruce being in multiple incongruous localization to keep the action at law locomote is very bad and/or lazy writing . The same is true of the mantises ’ ego - wipeout , which was as incomprehensible a conclusion by Brown as by the citizenry who made the sequence . I would like to call out the creative person , who managed to not only make the monsters that were supposed to be based on farm animals mostly unrecognisable but also unclear as to what Brown was doing to them .
at last , I ’d like to call out the giant corkboard in the bacillus : TAS writers ’ elbow room , listing random words and ideas and occupations which could be used to brainstorm possible new Batman villain and their shtik . Blame must doubtless descend on the two thrown dart which landed on “ farmer ” and “ brainsick scientist , ” and then the writers who shrug and said , “ Fine . Whatever . ” It ’s a disgrace there was no corkboard with idea for even the barest of reason a inherited scientist might screw farm motif , but oh well . As Farmer Brown would say — with no emotion , and without even the bare trace of a country accent—“Dagnabbit . ”

avowedly , there were two things I wish in the episode . The first is that for some rationality the robot - goat had to lead Bullock and the armoured car to Brown ’s hideout , which think the niggling convoy was move around at the walking speed of a caprine animal . The second matter is when they ’re trapped in the obtuse silo arugula with a “ hive ” of mantis eggs , Bullock flex to Batman and says , “ So you ’ve hold up the Joker and the rest of those weirdo , only to grease one’s palms it from Jed Clampett and a bunch of bugs . ”(Jed Clampett being a character in Beverly Hillbillies . ) Bullock knows Batman was trumpery for getting arrest by this stunned scientist because he ’s endure to die in a really off-the-wall way .
