Good audio is vital in any FPS game as it allows players to identify where the gunfire and footsteps are coming from. AlthoughTreyarch promised to improve the audio for Black Ops 6, players weren’t expecting to see a feature locked behind a $19.99 price tag like the Embody subscription.

Here’s exactly what the Embody subscription adds to Black Ops 6’s audio and why players find it controversial.

What is the Embody subscription in Black Ops 6?

The Embody subscription allows Black Ops 6 players to create a personalized profile under “Enhanced Headphone Mode Configuration” in exchange for a one-time payment of $19.99 for five years after a 30-day trial.

Black Ops 6’s free audio system already uses the Head Related Transfer Function (HRTF) technology, which simulates how the sound is transferred from the game to players' ears.

However, the Embody subscription offers something better. Thanks to its “Immerse Spacial Audio” technology, it increases the directional accuracy of sounds in Black Ops 6. In other words, players with an Embody subscription might hear things that players using the Universal Profile don’t.

We won’t know until Black Ops 6 releases on Oct. 25 as this feature is new, but it could as well be a pay-to-win — or better yet, pay-to-hear — mechanism. And, as one could expect, the Call of Duty community didn’t take it lightly.

What are the alternatives for Embody?

First of all, one of the most important peripherals you need for FPS games like Black Ops 6 is a great headphone, especially if you want to be competitive in online matches. A good headphone will allow you to identify where most footsteps are coming from.

Additionally, if you want to take an extra step towards improving your audio settings, you could tryDolby Atmos. This technology creates a three-dimensional audio experience that not only works in games, but with music, movies, and TV shows. Dolby Atmos is also cheaper than the Embody subscription as it costs $10.
